SMARTS Radio Club

What is SMARTS?

SMARTS is the Southwest Metro Amatuer Radio Transmitting Society.

We are a non-profit club, focused on Amateur Radio (Ham Radio), with members who are FCC licensed radio operators or those who have an interest in Amateur Radio. We enjoy and encourage radio operating events such as Field Day, Winter Field Day, Parks on the Air, and other annual events.

What is Amateur Radio?

There are over 730,000 Amateur Radio operators in the US, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. They are trained in communications techniques and basic electronics theory.

During emergencies and other times of need, Amateur Radio operators have provided worldwide public service. Amateur Radio has been recognized by FEMA and the American Red Cross as elements of the critical communications network needed during natural disasters and other emergencies.

What is the American Radio Relay League?

A large proportion of club members are also member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), enabling SMARTS to be an affiliated club.

ARRL is the national association for Amateur Radio in the US. Founded in 1914 by Hiram Percy Maxim as The American Radio Relay League, ARRL is a noncommercial organization of radio amateurs. ARRL numbers within its ranks the vast majority of active radio amateurs in the nation and has a proud history of achievement as the standard-bearer in amateur affairs. ARRL’s underpinnings as Amateur Radio’s witness, partner and forum are defined by five pillars: Public Service, Advocacy, Education, Technology, and Membership.

The ARRL promotes and provides support to amateur radio operators across the United States.

What services does SMARTS provide?

We are a non-profit serving communities in southwest Hennepin, Carver and Scott counties on the WB0RMK repeater. The WB0RMK (147.165+ 107.2 tone) repeater is located near the intersection of US-212 and Carver County Road 11 in Carver, MN. This repeater hosts the Sunday Night Carver County ARES net, at 8:30PM CT; with a directed net, followed by an open net where all are invited.

We, along with the Eden Prairie Radio Club, host monthly license exams at the Chanhassen Library.

We organize monthly Parks on the Air outings for any interested radio operator to participate.

We are a founding member of the Minnesota Amateur Radio Consortium, that hosts the North Star Radio Convention, an annual state-wide conference for amateur radio operators.
